Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo

Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo is a cinema verité documentary film about the adhan, Muslim call to prayer, a 1,400 year-old oral tradition that is about to be erased forever from the audioscape of Cairo. Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo tells the story of the adhan in the ancient metropolis of Cairo, introducing the muezzins of this generation, documenting the adhans they recite for the first – and only – time in history.

Each day in Cairo, muezzins cry out the adhan, calling believers to the five daily prayers from the city’s 4,000-plus mosques. Begun in the time of Muhammad, the tradition of the adhan dates back to the seventh century. The muezzins and their distinctive calls have never been documented on film nor recorded for historical, cultural, informational or documentary purposes.

In 2010, the Egyptian government began implementing the Tawheed Al Adhan, or Adhan Unification Project. This state-sponsored plan systemizes the adhan by broadcasting the voice of a single muezzin from a state radio station five times a day to all of the capital’s 4,000-plus mosques via wireless receivers. By removing muezzins from their mosques, the Tawheed Al Adhan effectively erases 1,400 years of oral tradition.

Since the beginning of implementation of the Adhan Unification Project, many political and social changes have taken place in Egypt that have altered the timeline of the Adhan Unification Project. On Look Films continues to be committed to documenting the adhan as history unfolds.

Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo documents the adhan during the major shift occurring with the implementation of the Tawheed al Adhan through the personal narratives of five muezzins from five different neighborhoods in Cairo.

Before the Tawheed Al Adhan is completed, it is imperative to document and honor this cultural practice before it ceases to exist.

Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo is a not-for-profit project fiscally sponsored and supported by the Hartley Film Foundation, with support from the National Geographic All Roads Film Project, Lucius and Eva Eastman Fund and by individuals like you.
