Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo tells the story of the adhan in the ancient metropolis of Cairo, introducing the muezzins of this generation. In 2010, a new law will go into effect reducing the daily symphony of thousands of diverse voices to a single pre-recorded call broadcast throughout the entire city using wireless receivers.
Five times each day, muezzins cry out the adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, from the thousands of mosques in Cairo, calling believers to each of the five daily prayers.
The institution of muezzin has existed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad, with the first muezzin being Bilal. The professional muezzin is chosen to serve at the mosque for his good character, voice and skills. Although the tradition of the adhan dates back to the seventh century, recordings are limited and contain no pertinent information for future generations.
In early 2010, the Egyptian government will implement the Tawheed Al Adhan, or Adhan Unification Project, a plan to systemize the adhan by broadcasting the voice of a single muezzin from a state radio station to each of the capital’s mosques via wireless receivers, displacing more than 10,000 men who currently recite the adhan in Cairo.
Before the Tawheed Al Adhan takes effect, it is necessary to document and honor this tradition before it ceases to exist. Through documentary film and digital recording, Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo seeks to preserve and record Cairo’s muezzins and the adhans they recite for the first – and only – time in history.
Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo is a not-for-profit project fiscally sponsored and supported by the Hartley Film Foundation, with support from the National Geographic All Roads Film Project.
