A short film created as part of the project entitled Voices and Faces of the Adhan:Cairo
Voices of Cairo is a short film, intended to act as a preview of Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo. As it begins, we are introduced to 24 year old Hassan Mustafa, muezzin of Masjid Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri, erected in the eleventh century in the neighborhood of Arab al-Yassar. Hassan tells the story of how the verses of the adhan became the method used in Islam to call people to prayer and reflects upon his personal experience with the adhan. Demonstrating the adhan first outside of the mosque, the camera follows Hassan inside as he commences the official call to prayer for Maghrib, sunset prayer. While Hassan calls believers to prayer, other voices join in and the film interweaves shots of other muezzins of Cairo calling from their mosques. Voices of Cairo closes with the magical symphony of thousands of voices calling people to prayer washing over Cairo.
Shot during the pre-production research and development trip in August 2009.
